Summertime and the living is...

Doesn't it look like the Mama Osprey is saying, "Ack! There's not enough room in this nest!"

I have been so overwhelmed lately.  This spring I took on two part time jobs (in addition to daily writing) and a writing class.  Though the class is over, I still feel like I'm barely treading water.  And ever since school's let out and summer vacation's started?  So. Not. Getting. Things. Done.

What was I thinking?  Working at home with three kids home during the summer?

Deep breaths.

I know it'll all get done.  It's just sometimes I get tired of seeing the dirty dishes in the sink, the dirt and dust on the floor (not to mention everywhere else) and the books, Lego, papers, and balled up clothes discarded all around the house.

Deep breaths.

Summertime.  The osprey babies have hatched.  The river feels soooo good to play in.  There is sand between all our toes.  The grass has grown long (see above about things not getting done) and wildflowers gracefully bow in the breeze...queen anne's lace, black eyes susans...  The goldfinches are back in their bright yellow glory.

Time for popsicles, pool visits, picnics in the front yard...

Time enough for Mama to write and work.

Time for slow-it-down summertime.

Exhale deeply with me won't you?

Out with the Old, In with the New: Brain, Child and Taproot magazines

I was so sorry to hear today that one of my favorite magazines, Brain, Child is ceasing publication. *insert lower lip dragging on the floor here*  I was especially sad since I had always wanted to see my work published there one day. *full face pout*

I felt like I grew up as a Mother with Brain, Child.  We were both just starting out, finding our way.  The essays connected me to other like-minded mothers when I knew no one else in the county I'd just moved into.

Through Brain, Child I got to know Andrea of Remains of the Day

But, the years have passed and we are both in a new stage.  The magazine will morph into something new (I hope...) and I am no longer treading water trying to care for three children born in three years.

And as often happens when we say goodbye to one thing...

...another thing gets to be welcomed in.

I've already introduced you to Taproot magazine.  Today in the mail I got the second issue.  Talk about perfect timing.

To say it is even more lush...well, check it out yourself.  More essays, poems, recipes, artwork, photography.  Delish!

And...I'm hoping it will take off and soar like my dear Brain, Child eventually did.

Peter Pan, Fairies and Secret Gardens

I feel compelled to share some of my all time favorite movies for children.  I mentioned one about foxes that our family enjoyed recently.

But hands down my absolute favorites are Peter Pan,

What are some of your favorites?

What's Cooking: Incubating Eggs

All those fox and dog attacks have really put a dent in our chicken flock.  I was so sad to have to pull out of our egg selling group at our local Farmers Market. So, with an eye towards next season, we've decided give incubating eggs a try.

A friend of the family loaned us his incubator and we've set up our first batch of eggs.  I still think we have some work to do on keeping humidity levels controlled.  Has anyone successfully done this before?  I'd love to hear a comment from you.

Ultimately, I think we'd like to try letting our own chickens raise their chicks, but we've just not had a broody hen.  I am excited (egg-cited?) to see what happens.  If all goes well, we could have just hatched chicks for mother's day!
